Alzheimer’s disease has different signs, but we usually ignore them because we can’t recognize them. This disease develops slowly which is why it goes unnoticed.
People think that a person acts a certain way because it is becoming older, but there are differences between these two things.
Signs of Alzheimer’s That Everyone Ignores
1. Memory loss. Everyone forgets about names sometimes, but those who have Alzheimer’s forget more after some time.
2. Difficulty performing familiar tasks. It isn’t unusual to forget why you have walked into a room, but those with Alzheimer’s forget familiar tasks such as how to button a shirt.
3. Problems with language. Every person occasionally has a trouble to find the right word, but those with Alzheimer’s lose a lot of words and people can’t understand them well.
4. Disorientation. If you find yourself in an unfamiliar place you can feel disoriented. But if you feel disoriented in a familiar place you might have Alzheimer’s.
5. Socially inappropriate behavior. This disease doesn’t only cause memory issues, but also affects one person’s ability to function appropriately. This person might forget to do familiar things such as bathing, driving, losing interest of important responsibilities, and misplacing items. You shouldn’t worry if the person forgets where the keys are, but you should worry if the person doesn’t know what the keys are used for.
6. Problems reasoning. Many people have difficulties to balance a check book. However, those who have Alzheimer’s forget how to use checks.
7. Seriously misplacing things. Every person can put a thing in a different place, but people who have Alzheimer’s can put the keys for example in the freezer.
8. Mood changes. Mood swings aren’t something abnormal in a day-to-day life. However, people who have Alzheimer’s can continually change moods. They can appear to be calm, but be full of rage the very next moment without having a particular reason.
9. Passive. People with Alzheimer’s become passive and can event stop doing the things they liked doing previously.
10. Significant Changes in Personality. People with Alzheimer’s change completely and can become unrecognisable.
Risk Factors and Prevention
There are certain risk factors such as family history, age, and genetic markers that can’t be changed. However, it can be prevented by engaging in activities that stimulate the brain.
It’s poorly publicized but true: People who have a cardiovascular disease also have a higher risk of getting Alzheimer’s. Therefore, anything that can prevent cardiovascular diseases can prevent Alzheimer’s as well.
Smoking –There is a research which proves that smokers have higher chances of developing Alzheimer’s than those who don’t smoke.
High Levels of Cholesterol – A Scandinavian research came to the conclusion that those with higher levels of cholesterol in their midlife have higher chances of Alzheimer’s when they get old.
High Blood Pressure – Another Scandinavian study found that people with high blood pressure in their midlife had two times higher chances of getting Alzheimer’s when they get old.
Diabetes – A Swedish study tested the cognitive functions on older people in the course of 6 years. They concluded that those with diabetes had higher chances of getting Alzheimer’s.
Obesity – Obese people are also at a higher risk of getting Alzheimer’s later in life almost by two times than those with normal BMI.
Exercise – Exercising can actually help to lower the chances of getting Alzheimer’s disease. People who are active at least two times per week can lower their risks of developing this disease.
Animal Fat – People who eat a lot of saturated fats have two times higher chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
Alcohol – People who drink less than three glasses of wine per day can reduce the risks of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
Mediterranean Diet – This diet is full with fruits and vegetables and doesn’t have saturated fats, which makes it an excellent diet to lower the chances of developing this disease.
Dietary Antioxidants – One Dutch research shows that those who took a lot of vitamin C and E lowered their chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
